As of April 2025, thousands of Cameroonians have fled to Nigeria to escape the ongoing conflict in the country\'s English-speaking regions. The civil war, which began in 2017, has resulted in over 4,000 civilian deaths and at least 712,000 displacements. Refugees in Nigeria, particularly in Cross River state, are supported by the UNHCR, which provides monthly stipends and vocational training. Many, like Solange Ndonga Tibesa, who survived abduction and violence by separatists, now volunteer and are training in environmental technologies. The conflict stems from long-standing grievances of political marginalization among Cameroon’s anglophone minority. President Paul Biya, in power since 1982 and running for reelection at age 92, has resisted decentralization and peace talks with separatists, often labeling them terrorists.
