On April 16, 2025, Ghana\'s Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources announced that the government had assumed operational control of the Damang gold mine, previously managed by South African company Gold Fields. This transition follows the rejection of Gold Fields\' application to renew its mining lease, which is set to expire on April 18. The Damang mine, which produced 135,000 ounces of gold in 2024, accounted for about 6% of Gold Fields\' total output. The company had ceased mining operations in 2023 and was processing stockpiles while implementing an end-of-life plan. Gold Fields emphasized its commitment to a responsible cessation of operations and ensuring the safety of its personnel and facilities.
